⚡ Where I Start On Site

First Steps

What to Do Before I Arrive

Half of these cases are solved in five minutes without calling anyone. Work through the list in order.

🏠 Check with the neighbours

Is the power out only in your flat or across the whole stairwell? If the neighbours are dark too, it is a grid company outage.

🔌 Open the panel

Look for the breaker that has tripped — its lever sits in the down position. Do not flick it back on several times in a row.

🔗 Unplug the appliances

Disconnect everything on the circuit that went dead. Often one appliance is at fault and the breaker holds once it is out.

📞 Call if it will not hold

The breaker refuses to stay on or trips again straight away? Then the fault is in the wiring and you need an electrician.

Causes

Why the Power Goes Out

Four causes account for almost every call-out of this kind that I take.

⚡ Circuit overload

A kettle, an oven and a heater on one circuit draw more current than it was designed for. The breaker cuts out — that is its job.

💦 Moisture in the wiring

A leak from above or a damp wall bridges the conductors. The power drops, but the cause stays inside the wall.

🔥 A burnt-out contact

A loose terminal in the panel heats up, darkens and eventually burns through. Power goes in parts: one room works, another does not.

🏚️ Old wiring

In Soviet-era buildings aluminium breaks at the joints. Power disappears and comes back on its own — the most dangerous case.
