Why does a circuit breaker trip?
A circuit breaker is a critical safety device in your home's electrical system. When it trips, it's not random — it's a warning sign that something is wrong in the circuit. The most common causes are overload, short circuit, or a faulty appliance plugged into a socket.
First steps: what to do right now
- Don't panic. The breaker did its job — it protected your home from a potential fire.
- Unplug all devices on the circuit that the breaker protects.
- Switch the breaker back on. If it stays on, the problem was likely caused by an appliance.
- If the breaker trips again, don't keep trying to reset it — this can damage the wiring.
When to call an electrician
Call an electrician right away if:
- The breaker trips repeatedly even after unplugging everything
- The panel is hot to the touch or gives off a burning smell
- The breaker makes a buzzing or crackling sound
- You can see cracks or melted terminals on the panel
- Your home has old socket breakers (no RCD system)
Common causes in detail
Overload: Too many devices running on a single circuit — for example, a stove, oven, and water heater all on the same line. Solution: redistribute the load or upgrade the breaker (if the wiring allows it).
Short circuit: A direct connection between live and neutral wires. This is dangerous and requires immediate professional help.
Faulty appliance: Wear or moisture inside a device can cause a leakage current. An RCD (residual current device) will trip specifically for this reason.
Prevention
The best way to avoid breaker trips is a regular electrical panel inspection. I recommend having your panel checked at least once every two years. In older homes with aluminium wiring or no RCD protection, an upgrade is especially important.
